Do Not Be Anxious
My eldest daughter and I spent the weekend at the Tatton Park Show then the next day went to Quarry Bank Mill. There we stumbled upon an area that had been left for wildflowers. As brilliant as the RHS Show was, this place with its variety of colours and different species captivated us for a long time. We gazed with awe at the huge numbers of colours and variety of shapes of petals that were laid out like beautiful wallpaper. Marvelling that all this was self-seeded year after year, with little need for cultivation.
These verses found in Matthew (& Luke) sprang to mind:
‘Consider how the wildflowers grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!’ … Therefore do not worry about tomorrow…’ Ch 6:28-30,34
A couple of verses earlier Jesus told his followers not to worry about food, because even the birds are provided for by God. Sounds easy but it’s so very hard to do, isn’t it? Not to worry or be anxious.
We can trust God’s provision. The proof is in the beauty and compassionate care He has for all of creation. If God faithfully provides for His creation, will he ever do any less for us?
So when you feel anxious about things that are beyond your control, Jesus reminds us to "consider the lilies of the field". . They do not struggle; they have no anxieties about their future; yet they grow. He is showing us how free we can be from all cares and anxieties if we cast ourselves upon God’s provision.
